Berry Broccoli Smoothie The Entire Family Will Enjoy

Alright, let’s talk about this berry broccoli smoothie because I’m sure you’re thinking: “What an odd combination!” Let me tell you how I even discovered this delicious concoction in the first place. I’ll be honest: I’m not usually a big fan of smoothies. The blender I used to have was terrible and I hated using that piece of junk. I prefer to sit down and eat my meals, rather than drink them. And often, smoothies are carbohydrate-based and don’t have a nice balance of protein and healthy fats. However, a few things happening over the past month made me reconsider:

  • Working early schedules at my corporate wellness consulting job. I was leaving my house at 5 am. A smoothie would have been quick (provided I made it the night before) and easy to tolerate in the early hours.
  • A teething toddler who’s selective about what he eats but more likely to try a drink.
  • A new blender! I’ve been drooling over a Vitamix, but decided that $300 is not in our budget right now. The Ninja Blender had great reviews and much affordable, and that’s what I went with.

My friend who leads a girl scout group invited me to give a nutrition talk to the girls. They’ve been learning about nutrition and food all month long. These girls are smart and nutrition savvy! Coincidentally, the Kids Eat Right Initiative was giving away mini-grants for dietitians to teach two community classes about breakfast. I was one of 30 lucky winners. Perfect timing!

Making and trying food is always the most fun part of a nutrition class. I experimented with this recipe few times until I finally got a winner. It has broccoli. Yep, a berry broccoli smoothie! And more people liked it than not: both of my boys (they devoured it!), my husband, my parents-in-law, and half of the girls in the class. Read the suggestions below if you can’t imagine this berry broccoli smoothie would work.

If you want to boost the protein of this berry broccoli smoothie, add more yogurt or almond butter. If you want this to be your entire meal, drink 1.5-2 servings.

Suggestions:

  • Give it a chance. My mother-in-law tried it and said the broccoli taste is strong in the first sip but you get used to it and stop noticing the more you drink.
  • You can always start with half the amount of the broccoli. For me, I can add another cup of broccoli and still enjoy it. Start where YOU are.
  • I tried this recipe with steamed broccoli when I did it for the girl scouts. The smell was too strong and that’s why I think frozen is better.
  • The taste of the almond butter is clear. If you like it, great. If you don’t, cut the amount in half (2 tbsp). You will lost some of the protein though.

Nour’s guidance and expertise was the key to dramatically halting our son’s [Crohn’s] disease progression! His pediatric gastroenterologist is now in agreement of our choice to treat solely with diet and supplements. All his labs have improved and his inflammatory markers are so low they are practically nonexistent.

Before working with Nour, I experienced intestinal pain off and on for for 54 years with minimal success on medications. I have benefited 100% from Nour’s program as I am now pain free!

A lot of time and money was wasted on foods that I thought would help my digestive struggles [diarrhea, bloating, hunger], but in fact I was making it worse. The main benefit is getting a handle on what negatively affects my digestive symptom. Doing a total 180 to my eating habits has been pretty amazing.

  1. Great idea! Wish you could come give Layla’s troop a talk about nutrition! (They love to cook and bake, and often plan activities around that!) I’ll have to try this recipe with the family. Thanks for a great idea. 🙂

    1. Thanks Sherin! Next time we visit you, I would love to give a talk to Layla’s troop! Give this one a try. If you want me to share some breakfast talking point, let me know!

  2. The first thought that came to mind when I read your title was: no way my kids would drink that! However, i think I would give it a try without telling them the ingredients. More blueberries than broccoli to hide the broccoli, what do you think? 😉

    1. You have 1 c of blueberries, 2 c of strawberries, and 2 c of grape juice against 1 c of broccoli… isn’t that enough fruit??? Try it without telling them what’s in it. You can also add a bit of honey. Let me know how it goes!

  3. Nice! I’ll have to share this with my veggie-loving wife! I eat my minimum four cups a day of veggies, but she could eat them all day. She’ll be happy to see a way to put broccoli in smoothies. Lol.

  4. love this , am single woking man and really hate my kitchen its full of equipment but in there cartoons 0.o

i decide to get my blinder out and try this smoothies its really nice , i add whey protein to that mix and its give my what i need in the morning , thanks for sharing and god bless you

  5. Thank you for the recipe. I just made it and it is great! I love that you can’t even see the broccoli. I expected to see little bits, and since my kids have an aversion to anything green I wanted to try it first. I can’t even taste it in there and I added about 2 cups of broccoli. Also, I did not have grape juice so I substituted tart cherry juice instead and sunflower seed butter in place of almond or peanut butter. Again, thanks so much for the fabulous idea!
