Diabetes and Prediabetes: Get the Facts and Get Serious

November is National Diabetes Month, an initiative by the American Diabetes Association to raise awareness of this disease. Here are some facts:

  • 26 million: the number of children and adults in the US who have diabetes
  • 79 million: the number of Americans who have prediabetes. They are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes
  • $174: the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the US
  • 2 out of 3: the number of people with diabetes who die from heart disease or stroke
  • Kidney failure, blindness among adults, and amputations: conditions caused by uncontrolled diabetes
  •  60-70%: the number people with diabetes with mild to sever nerve damage, resulting in pain in feet or hands, slowed digestion, and sexual dysfunction.

Does eating too much sugar cause diabetes? Do you have to eat special diabetes foods if you have diabetes? Can you eat desserts if you get diagnosed with diabetes? The American Diabetes Association answers these questions on their Diabetes Myths Page.

Diabetes is a serious condition. Blood sugar control is very important to prevent its undesirable side effects.

This month, the American Diabetes Association is encouraging Americans to upload a personal image on the Association’s Facebook page to share “A Day in the Life of Diabetes” and what it means for them to live with diabetes. And for every photo, CVS pharmacy is donating $1.00 to the American Diabetes Association.

Prediabetes

Prediabetes is a condition when your blood sugar (glucose) is higher than normal but not high enough to meet the diagnosis of diabetes. People with prediabetes are at a high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, as well as heart disease and stroke. Some research shows that long-term damage on the heart and circulation may have occurred already at the prediabetes stage.

Nour’s guidance and expertise was the key to dramatically halting our son’s [Crohn’s] disease progression! His pediatric gastroenterologist is now in agreement of our choice to treat solely with diet and supplements. All his labs have improved and his inflammatory markers are so low they are practically nonexistent.

Before working with Nour, I experienced intestinal pain off and on for for 54 years with minimal success on medications. I have benefited 100% from Nour’s program as I am now pain free!

A lot of time and money was wasted on foods that I thought would help my digestive struggles [diarrhea, bloating, hunger], but in fact I was making it worse. The main benefit is getting a handle on what negatively affects my digestive symptom. Doing a total 180 to my eating habits has been pretty amazing.
